Reflecting Christ in ALL We Do

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

As Christians, we’re called to reflect Christ in everything. This calling is especially relevant during culturally significant events like Halloween, where our actions and choices can either darken or illuminate the love and truth of Jesus.

So, what do we do with Halloween and its complex history, which blends ancient traditions and modern practices. While it often includes dark costumes, decorations, and festivities, it also presents an opportunity for Christians to thoughtfully engage with the world around us.

Jesus declared that we are the light of the world. This light isn’t meant to be hidden, but to shine brightly and guide others toward God's truth. As we navigate Halloween, let’s consider how we can let our light shine and make the most of the opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ.

One way to reflect Christ is to establish traditions that honor Him. This is why we are now seeing more and more events like “Harvest Festivals” and “Light Nights”. They provide safe and joyous alternatives for families. Consider this: Through Halloween, the world has given us a means of spreading the Word by distributing treats with encouraging messages and Bible verses!

Our decisions regarding costumes, decorations, and activities should align with the principles found in Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Rather than being all worried about how we are to navigate Halloween, let’s allow this verse guide us to make choices that honor God and reflect His goodness.

Being spiritually grounded is essential for navigating any season. The Apostle Paul tells us to "put on the full armor of God" so we can “stand firm” against anything not of God.

As we approach Halloween, let’s embrace it as an opportunity to shine the light of Christ into our communities.

Kitchen One for One will be at two “Trunk or Treat” events this Halloween season, and we have been given the opportunity to share the light of Christ to hundreds of people that are doing their best to navigate what at times is a dark and confusing world… let’s make the most of it!
