Because He Says So

There are certain undercurrents that run all throughout Scripture. Here are just several of the hundreds of passages about helping those in need (a simple internet search brings up over 300 verses):

  • Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. Psalm 41:1

  • Whoever despises their neighbor sins, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy. Proverbs 14:21

  • Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. Proverbs 19:17

  • "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." Matthew 25:35

  • Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

  • What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? James 2:14-17

Extending compassion and assistance to others aligns us with God.

Here are some practical ways you can follow the example Christ set for us and help those in need today:

  • Volunteer: Give your time to local shelters, food banks, ministries, and community centers. Your presence and assistance can make it possible for these places to do what they do.

  • Donate: Give away your stuff. Organizations that help the less fortunate are always in need of non-perishable food, clothing, and hygiene items. Every little bit helps.

  • Acts of Kindness: Small gestures matter. Smile at strangers, hold doors open, and offer kind words. These simple acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day by making them feel seen and valued.

  • Financial Support: Contribute to Christ-centered nonprofits. Directly help individuals facing financial hardships. Even a small amount can make a huge difference.

Jesus didn’t run from those in need. He stopped and turned around for the broken and hurting. We, then, are called to do the same. We do it because He did it. We do it because He says so.
