Humility
Following and being a disciple of Christ requires humility. It requires us to pause and invite the Holy Spirit in to guide our thoughts and feelings as we go through life. We have to humbly ask the Lord to reveal the areas of ourselves where pride gets in the way and hinders us from loving God and others well (or receiving love from God and others well).
With Kitchen One for One, whether it’s serving homeless people out on the streets or serving hungry guests at a wedding reception, God’s way is to do it with humility. God’s way is to do it how Jesus shows us to do it.
What it means to be humble:
Agreeing with God on who He says He is and who He says we are.
Having a modest estimate of our own importance.
Remembering that our gifts, talents, and everything is from God.
Acceptance of our own weakness, and recognition of God’s strength.
Knowing we are helpless without God, but that with God all things are possible.
Following Christ, doing things God’s way, and resisting the enemy.
What humility is not:
Thinking less of ourselves or playing small and calling it humble.
Intentionally devaluing ourselves or discrediting ourselves to appear humble.
Being puffed up with pride or knowledge.
Having an increased importance of ourselves and our own way.
Doing good just for others to see.
Having humility is to be Christ-like.
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled himself in obedience to God… Philippians 2:3-11
In all we do, we need God’s help to have humility and be more Christ-like.
